That same year, Amazon unsuccessfully sought to get her recused from agency probes against the company, arguing she was too biased. The District of Columbia also tried to sue Amazon on antitrust grounds before, but its lawsuit was dismissed by a federal judge last year. Experts say the FTC faces a few hurdles in its own case, including convincing the court which slice of the market Amazon is allegedly monopolizing. In a blog post responding to the lawsuit, Amazon General Counsel David Zapolsky accused the FTC of attempting to “gerrymander alleged market” to portray Amazon as something it’s not. The FTC also alleges Amazon keeps sellers dependent on services that have allowed it to collect billions in revenue every year.

The U.S. consumer agency, which enforces federal antitrust law, and 17 states filed their lawsuit against Amazon in Seattle federal court on Tuesday, asking a U.S. judge to consider an injunction and other penalties to combat alleged unlawful conduct. The FTC's lawsuit is related to but broader than a series of private consumer cases filed in recent years against Amazon that are pending in the same U.S. federal court. The private antitrust cases offer an early window into some of the legal arguments Amazon could be expected to make to challenge the FTC's lawsuit. Generally speaking, U.S. judges are "wary of using antitrust law to punish low-pricing behavior," said antitrust scholar Sean Sullivan of the University of Iowa's law school. Sullivan said it is not always a clear line between "good low pricing" — based on market competition — and "bad low pricing" that helps a company acquire or maintain market power.

Almost 6,000 years ago, communities used a cave in Spain as a burial place. "The actions of fragmenting and manipulating the bones may well be related to specific ritual events performed inside the cave," Martínez Sánchez said. In a recent CNN poll, for example, only 28% of Republicans thought Biden legitimately won sufficient votes to win the 2020 election. Here is a (highly) abbreviated rundown of how US society settled (so far anyway) on an eight-hour workday. The strike failed … but four years later US Steel reduced its workday from twelve to eight hours.”Pioneering employers — and a six-hour workday — make wavesIn 1926, the Ford Motor Company, under the leadership of Henry Ford, famously instituted an eight-hour-a-day, five-day workweek. Kellogg decided in 1930 to institute six-hour shifts in place of eight-hour shifts, with some reduction in workers’ pay. Kellogg’s move attracted national attention, and soon there was a push to federally legislate a six-hour workday. Hunnicutt interviewed several Kellogg workers about why they returned to a longer workday.

Money is a big reason why many people take on side hustles, but there are non-financial reasons why people try side jobs too. "Side hustlers are much more likely to view this extra income as essential, rather than a passion project or a way to get ahead financially." In the April survey, 39% of US adults said they do something "to earn extra income on the side" outside of their primary income source. For example, people may want to make extra money outside of a main job to put toward paying off debt. One full-time worker who tries side hustles told Insider he does his side hustle work during some nights.

How Much Can a Water Filter Do?
  + stars: | 2023-05-30 | by ( Dana G. Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Since the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act, though, other water-monitoring issues have arisen. He gave the example of nitrate, an agricultural pollutant that’s present in the water supply in Des Moines. While the local water treatment plant takes steps to remove the contaminant, there are questions about whether the allowable levels could still cause health harms. In several of the recent crises, contamination occurred when lead leached into the water as it traveled through the distribution pipes. National regulations about the amount of lead permitted in pipes have been strengthened over the years, but many old water distribution systems have not been updated and contain unsafe levels.
New York CNN —CEOs and other senior leaders very often want employees in the workplace for more days than employees who can do their jobs remotely would like. Many leaders assert more in-person experiences can, among other things, provide better career development for the youngest and newest employees. The good old days may not have been that goodConsider that before the pandemic, most employees were at their workplace five days a week. But fixating on the question of “how many days should employees be in the office?” is the wrong approach, Yost said. “In general there has been a lack of intentionality of how we develop young people,” Yost said.
The House Vacancies Clause in the U.S. Constitution can be seen (here). New York state law requires the governor to call a special election within 10 days of a House vacancy (see subdivision three) (here). “Hochul has no power to replace Santos,” said Derek Muller, an election law expert at the University of Iowa College of Law (here). “If Santos resigns, it depends on when he resigns as to whether there will be a special election before the next general election to fill his vacancy,” he said. “Hochul must announce within 10 days, and the special election must take place within 70 to 80 days, but not if the vacancy occurs after July 1, 2024.”VERDICTMisleading.
For young workers, not being in an office can mean they don't get as much feedback from colleagues. The pushback against remote work comes as more CEOs have been calling workers back to the office. But workers — especially those taking care of kids or others — grew accustomed to the flexibility that remote work can afford. Despite the risks, many of those potentially in danger of missing out on professional growth are most in favor of remote work, according to surveys, the Times noted. And some companies that have embraced remote work report success.
Republican hopefuls to court evangelical vote in Iowa

CLIVE, Iowa, April 22 (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopefuls will make their pitch to evangelical voters in Iowa on Saturday, the first major event for candidates to court the key conservative voting bloc in a state set to hold the party's first nominating contest in early 2024. It will be headlined by former Vice President Mike Pence, a devout evangelical who may soon launch a presidential bid, and U.S. Iowa is slated to hold the first-in-the-nation Republican caucus in early 2024. Strong evangelical support early on in the nominating process could help give a challenger a chance to strike a blow against Trump, who won three-fourths of the white evangelical vote nationally in 2020. Trump won 76% of the white evangelical vote in 2020, down from 80% in 2016, according to Edison Research exit polls.
Legendary Female Artists on the Younger Women Who Inspire Them
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +20 min
The Artist’s Mind What it feels like for female artists to wrestle with ambition, ego, ambivalence and inheritance. That isolation has, historically, been especially true for women artists, some of the most celebrated of whom have seen “writer” or “painter” or “filmmaker” treated as a secondary part of their identity. For this issue, we asked legendary female artists to tell us about a younger woman whose work excites them and gives them hope. But for the current generation of women artists, who have come of age with models who more closely resemble them, identity seems more like a source of community than a trap. Women artists, born into a Babylon of exclusion and possibility, reveal that creative inheritance is as promiscuous as legal inheritance is strict.
You might be able to get out of the way of a testosterone-fueled human driver in an SUV, but the self-driving cars will never see him coming. As more self-driving cars enter the market, speed through Hajbabaie's intersections goes up and fuel consumption goes down. The same will be true of proposals like white traffic lights for self-driving cars. If self-driving cars ever move beyond shared services like taxis and deliveries, the first vehicles are going to be owned by wealthy people. The world of tomorrowFor the moment, cities are in no danger of being overrun by self-driving cars.

A new report from analytics firm Rival IQ breaks down social-media engagement in 2022 by industry. Here are three key takeaways for brands across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Brands are getting higher engagement on TikTok than on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, according to a new report by social-media analytics company Rival IQ. The brands studied had at least 5,000 followers apiece on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, and 25,000 to 1 million followers on Facebook. Sports teams scored the second-highest engagement on Instagram and TikTok, while also having the highest engagement rates across Twitter and Facebook.
